What is a Bioblitz?

A Bioblitz is an event where numerous people gather in one area to photograph and catalogue species of plants, animals, and fungi. All you have to do is explore the park, take photos of species you find, and upload the photos to the iNaturalist app.

After the event, we encourage experienced users such as Texas Master Naturalists and environmental professionals and enthusiasts, to help identify species on iNaturalist. This data gives scientists and park professionals great insight into what species we have here in our local parks. This helps determine decisions related to environmental conservation, park maintenance practices, etc.

We recommend wearing long pants, long sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a reusable water bottle. We will have City staff, water bottle refill coolers, and first aid on site at our starting point - Breckinridge Park Pavilions, Lot C.

How to use the iNaturalist app -  Click here to join our iNaturalist Project Page 🐌🍄
iNaturalist makes it easy for everyone to record and count observations and is completely free to use. Here's how to get started with iNaturalist

We recommend downloading the iNaturalist app onto your phone and practice using it BEFORE the event, as the day of the event is a race against the clock and filled with excitement with so many nature enthusiasts in one spot! You'll want to get started right away when you arrive, and there is no Wi-Fi in the park (cell signal is good), so please get familiar with the app before you arrive.

We will have a limited number of staff and volunteers present to help you navigate the app if you run into issues.

City Nature Challenge:
This bioblitz is part of the City Nature Challenge weekend, where hundreds of cities around the world compete to see who can make the most iNaturalist observations in one weekend. This event is one of many in the Dallas-Fort Worth area designed to give community members a opportunity to contribute to the challenge and help DFW WIN!!

But you don't have to be part of an event to contribute to the Nature Challenge - even observations you make in your own backyard during April 24-27 go towards our DFW total!

2025 RESULTS: DFW finished #5 globally in number of observations, #6 in species, and #8 in observers... out of 669 cities!!!
